The firm of Schloetter was founded in 1912 by the research and development chemist Dr Ing Max Schlötter in Southern Germany. In 1969, the company set up its first satellite company in England and now has companies Ireland, Sweden, Singapore and China, serving the rest of the world through a network of agents. Now in the third generation of the family, Schloetter has remained family owned.
For over 100 years now, Schloetter have focused on research and development of surface finishing technology for both decorative and functional industries. Initially, the companies focus was exclusively on electroplating processes, but having developed a very white silver plating electrolyte, as costs became increasingly important, thinner deposits of silver needed protection. This protection not only needed to be hard wearing, but also invisible. This lead to the company become involved in lacquer and paint technology.
This was established in Schloetter England where today all paint manufacturing, paint research and development and quality testing is carried out.
The more we became involved in paint products, the more demands for other applications grew. ‘Can we develop paint with good adhesion to glass, with good scuff resistance, even with matt finishes and by the way this needs to be water based’. This was a glass bottle application and perfecting this technology would mean that sleeves between bottles for the purpose of transportation would not be necessary (a clear cost saving for the bottle industry). The challenge was set, and we successfully perfected our first product for this application more than 15 years ago.
This has fitted very neatly with the company philosophy of developing improved surface finishes to enhance the characteristics and market appeal of our customers’ products, whilst often bringing other benefits.
Today our paint and lacquer range includes, solvent, 2 pack, water based, stoved, air drying and UV cured products. These are not only for the glass industries but also for many plastic and metal applications. Issues such as adhesion to difficult substrates, corrosion resistance, chemical resistance and lower VOC’s are all studied.
We are able to supply exact colour matched paint ready for application or if the customer prefers, base paints supplied with dyes and pigments, which can be transparent, opaque, metallic, thermochromic or flip colours, dependent upon customer requirements.
We are exhibiting for the first time at the GLASSTEC exhibition Düsseldorf (Hall 13, stand number 13G91). Please come and visit us and tell us about your challenges. We may already have a product ready to meet your needs or ideas about how a product could be developed.
