SWISSPACER Air reloaded

Component for pressure equalization in insulating glass available in proven quality for glasstec

Kreuzlingen / Switzerland, October 2018
At the last glasstec the Swiss warm edge manufacturer SWISSPACER announced a new special component. The SWISSPACER Air ensures pressure equalisation in multi-pane insulating glass and counteracts climatic loads. Now, after long-term tests, it is available in Swiss quality for glasstec 2018.

SWISSPACER Air provides the answer to a fundamental problem in the industry. The air in the space between the panes tends to continuously adapt to the surrounding air pressure. But it is prevented because the system is closed. If glasses are installed at a different height than produced, no pressure compensation takes place and it can lead to significant deformations – the glass bulges outwards or inwards. This effect also occurs during transportation with large height differences, such as over mountain passes, through tunnels or by air freight. This leads to considerable tension on the glass edges. As a consequence, damage to the edge bond can occur – up to glass breakage. The risk of such damage can be minimised if a continuous pressure equalisation takes place between the outside climate and the space between the panes. SWISSPACER Air makes this equalisation possible.

"At the product presentation for the last glasstec, we were already certain that the SWISSPACER Air was working", explains Head of Development and Product Management Dr. Martin Henseler. "Unfortunately, it turned out that there were some aspects of industrial manufacturing that we were not satisfied with and that simply did not meet our high quality standards. At the same time, our developers took the time to improve the function of the SWISSPACER Air by changing the construction in some details. With the adjustments that have now been put through their paces, we can be sure that the SWISSPACER Air meets all requirements."

The SWISSPACER Air is a metal sleeve with integrated special membrane. The special structure prevents water vapor from accumulating in the space between the panes, which leads to the formation of condensation or damages the metallic low-E coatings. Due to the permanent pressure relief, the insulating glass preserves its function and quality in the long term. So a normal life can be achieved – even if climate loads occur. This ensures a high degree of safety for end customers as well as insulating glass and window manufacturers.

The attachment of the component is simple and reliable. "Our customers receive the right tools and precise instructions for installation," says Karl-Theo Roes, Head of Market Development and Innovations at SWISSPACER.

Compared to capillary tubes, the process times are significantly reduced, because the SWISSPACER Air is placed in less than three minutes. The uncomplicated processing allows a high repeat accuracy and consistent quality. "That saves our customers important time and money", says Karl-Theo Roes. "Furthermore the SWISSPACER Air enables a unique appearance and aesthetics."

The small component disappears invisibly into the secondary edge bond, thus enabling a perfect look. The SWISSPACER Air is well secured during storage, transport and installation of the insulating glass because it is integrated into the edge seal and thus protected against impact.

SWISSPACER does not compromise on quality. "We used the time to have our component thoroughly examined by IFT Rosenheim, and with the results available, we are currently in the process of being approved by the German Institute for Construction Engineering (DIBT)", explains Dr. Martin Henseler.
